Your Post-Graduate Students’ Society congratulates you on your acceptance to McGill University and welcomes you to our growing family of post-graduates! The Internal Affairs Committee of PGSS has planned a wide variety of events for you during the McGill Graduate and Postdoctoral Orientation to help ease your transition into graduate student life and to celebrate the start of the new academic year!

Orientation Week is designed around you, helping to uncover the answers to the questions you have, and providing you information about campus resources, programs and services. Be prepared to meet new people, and to make new friends, orientation is your chance to show everyone that you are McGill ready.

LICM Know Your Rights: The Charter of Student Rights at McGill and tenancy law in Quebec (FREE, Registration Suggested)- There will be two sessions available.

This workshop will inform graduate students of their rights as students at McGill and as residents of Quebec, and the services available to them through the Legal Information Clinic at McGill (LICM). Specifically, participants will learn about their rights under the Charter of Student Rights, and other McGill policies, as well as their rights as a tenant when renting an apartment. Participants will also have the opportunity to ask questions about these topics and the ways that the LICM and its Student Advocacy service can further support graduate students. AGSEM, your teaching union at McGill University will be present to answer questions and provide informational flyers.

PGSS Welcome BBQ Bash (FREE + GIVEAWAYS!, Registration Suggested)

You are invited to our annual 2018-19 PGSS Welcome BBQ at Thomson House. THIS is the biggest event of Orientation Week and you must be there!! Join us for an evening for food and activities. Grab your FREE burger ticket at the Discover McGill Graduate Orientation and make your way to the BBQ Bash at Thomson House! This is a great opportunity to socialize with other graduate students and meet representatives from student clubs and committees to learn how to get involved on campus!

This event is open to both incoming students AND existing PGSS members. Tickets for free burger and discounted drinks for new students (don’t forget your student IDs). $$ for returning students(cash). New students should register to reserve their free burgers.

Macdonald Campus Activity Day ($$, Registration Required, Includes Shuttle)

What is included: Macdonald Campus Tour, Canoeing, Kayaking, Standup Paddle, Beach volleyball, PGSS Shuttle round-trip, other activities at Mac Campus

Take a break from the hot Montreal sun and enjoy the Saturday near the refreshing waters of the St.Lawrence river at the Macdonald Campus Canoe Race! This is a great way to meet fellow graduates from your entering class and to shake off the freshman jitters in a fun and engaging outdoor activity! You will get a tour of Macdonald Campus or you can stroll to the town of Ste-Anne-de-Bellevue, about a 15-minute walk from the Macdonald-Stewart Building, where you will find eateries to suit all tastes and budgets. You will also get a chance to try your hands on canoes, kayaks or paddles and many more activities. No prior experience required! Make sure to bring a swimsuit or change of clothes because you will get wet! Registration is required and spaces are limited. Life vests will be provided for related events. Price includes shuttle bus from Thomson House to Macdonald campus and back.

Montreal Pub Crawl ($16, Registration Required)

Enjoy a cold pint of beer (or a few!) at 5 of Montreal’s most popular bars! Perhaps you’ll find your new favorite hangout spot! This event is a perfect way to break the ice with fellow graduate students and to bond over delicious local brews! We will be starting at Thomson House and making our way to Saint-Laurent to explore Bar-Des-Pins (drinking games!), McKibbins Irish Pub (a proper Irish experience!), Sumi Dojo (sake bombs and drums!), and finally La P’tite Grenouille (10L beer jugs, games, and karaoke!).

Slots from 3.30 until 5.30. All the groups meet at the last bar and enjoy karaoke/ drinking games while the rest of the crawl catches up. Registration is required and spaces are limited, this event DOES SELL OUT SO ACT FAST.

Got no plans for Labor Day? What’s better than to enjoy a bike ride exploring the city of Montreal and to fit a bit of exercise into your daily routine! This guided tour on BIXI bikes will take you through the famous Old Port of Montreal and the colorful streets of the Plateau that are home to Montreal’s extravagant graffitis! Two different time slots are available for the tour. Registrants must know how to ride a bike. Refreshments will be provided. Registration is required and spaces are limited.

Trivia Night (FREE, No Registration)

Mont-Royal Mountain Hike (FREE, Registration Suggested)

The only place to capture a breathtaking aerial view of the entire city of Montreal is at the top of Mount-Royal! During our guided hike up the mountain, you will have the opportunity to walk through the vast Maple Tree forest overlooking the city and escape the heat of the summer sun! We will make our way to the top for a photo opportunity and enjoy healthy snacks provided by our very own PGSS Health and Wellness Committee!

Movie Night & Taste our Taps (FREE, No Registration Required)

Come enjoy a free flow yoga class on the soft grass of the Rutherford Park. Matts and blocks are available for free loan, or bring your own. Courtney a fellow PGSS member and experienced yoga instructor will lead the group. Members of all levels and experience are welcome.

Is it a Bus? Is it a Boat?
We have a perfect Saturday planned for you. Join us for a stroll through the charming cobblestone streets and winding alleys of the historic district, revealing the rich heritage of the city. Once the group reaches Old port, the excursion will start with a professional captain-driver and a funny informative guide. The tour on land will lead you through in the historical area of Old Montreal to see the famous attractions, such as the Place d’Armes, Notre-Dame Basillic, Cadillac’s house and the Wall Street of Montreal. The exciting half part of this tour is making a grand splash into St-Laurent River for the spectacular views of the Habitat 67, Clock tower, Jacques Cartier Bridge and the Montreal Skyline from a totally unique perspective.

Join our annual Montreal Food Crawl to discover the hidden treasures of the Plateau’s restaurant scene! The Montreal Food Crawl will take you to 5 restaurants near campus that you must experience! Figuring out your Health and Dental Plan may be a complicated thing if you are new to the Quebec Healthcare System. Let us help you! Representatives from ASEQ and Blue Cross will go over what is included in your PGSS Health and Dental Coverage and your Blue Cross International Health Insurance Plan and answer your questions. We will also have a presentation from McGill Health Services on how to quickly access a doctor in Quebec and how to receive emergency care without spending hours in line at the Emergency Room! Learn how to get the care you need and how to get the most out of your health and dental plan! Snacks and juice will be provided.

The first big House Party of the year, the PGSS Thomson Housewarming Party welcomes all graduate students and postdoctoral fellows of McGill! Who said that summer ended early? We will have our favorite DJs from CKUT radio station playing for us and our resident photographer on site to take stylish shots of you and your friends!
